Provenance

Sir Charles Waldstein, subsequently Walston (1856-1927), Newton Hall, Newton, Cambridge, by whom acquired in circa 1900 (as Charles and Henri Beaubrun, 'The Cour d'Amour of Marie de' Medici');
Thence by family inheritance through his son, Henry Walston, 1st Baron Walston (1912-91);
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 9 July 2003, lot 63 (as Circle of Déruet), where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The canvas has been relined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is relatively clear but uneven. There is a small loss, measuring just less than 1cm. squared, just to the right of the head of the central lady. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a milky, opaque varnish, beneath which it is possible to discern at least two campaigns of restoration. The older retouchings may be found largely in the sitters' faces and flesh tones; there are other areas in the floor around the sitters' feet; and the more recent retouchings are scattered throughout the background at the top and through the womens' dresses. The face, chest and upper body of the central figure, and the face of the lady third from the right, contain the most restoration. There are small areas of strengthening in some of the little flowers in the background. The aforementioned retouchings are generally well-executed and do not disrupt the reading of the painting, the overall appearance of which is bright and even. Offered in a later gilt and moulded frame in good condition.
