Description
- North Italian School, first half 17th century
- Martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria
- indistinctly signed in monogram on the rock, lower right: G[...]
- oil on canvas, unlined
Condition
In overall very good condition. The canvas is unlined, the paint surface is stable and dirty and the varnish is discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light is hampered by the thick, milky varnish which fluoresces opaquely, but there appear to be a handful of small, very minor areas of retouching scattered in the margins, notably centre right and in the upper left corner, but very little other intervention. Offered in a gesso moulded gilt frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note
This painting depicts the moment at which the spiked wheel, devised by the Emperor Maxentius to torture Catherine, was destroyed from heaven by a thunderbolt, here wielded by the angels who also bear her crown - alluding to her royal birth - and her martyr's palm.
