Whilst Dottssa Paola Rossi has proposed an attribution to Domenico Tintoretto, on the basis of photographs, drawing comparison with a painting formerly in the Liechtenstein Gallerie, Vienna (see P. Rossi, Jacopo Tintoretto: I Ritratti, Venice 1973, vol. I, plate 264), the painting shows closer stylistic similarities with Montemezzano, who favoured the distinctive hairstyle found here.

Provenance

Ferdinand Edouard, Baron von Stumm (1845 – 1925), Schloß Rauisch-Holzhausen, Hessen;
Thence by descent.

Condition

In overall fair condition. The canvas has an old relining, the paint surface is quite dirty and the varnish is rather discoloured. There is evidence of wear to the paint surface throughout. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals little intervention save for some small areas of retouching in the background, a larger area in the sitter's chest, and a handful of spot retouchings in her face. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
