Condition

In overall very good condition. The painting is formed of a single, flat piece of slate. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals pinprick retouchings mainly in the sitter's forehead and white collar, and other small retouchings scattered along the edges of the painting in the background.

This slate is a reduced, period repetition of Domenichino's Portrait of Paolo Spada, from circa 1615-18, in the Galleria Spada, Rome.1
