Condition
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along a horizontal line running the width of the canvas approx. 1/3 from the upper margin, possibly caused by an old fold or seam. There are retouchings scattered throughout, largely to reduce the appearance of the network of craquelure, and notably to an old, horizontal tear or scratch running through the basket carried by the man upper right and measuring approx. 25 cm, to an old, L-shaped tear or scratch in the foliage upper centre and measuring approx. 10 x 5 cm., around and in the body of Neptune centre left, and to a scratch running vertically up from his knee measuring approx. 30 cm., and to a concentrated area in the arms of the fishermen measuring approx. 10 x 10 cm. These restorations are sensitively executed, not discernible to the naked eye and do not impede the reading of the image. Offered in a Spanish parcel gilt frame in good condition.
