Description

  • Italian School, 16th Century
  • Ecce homo
  • oil on panel

Condition

In overall reasonably good condition. The panel is formed of a single, flat plank, supported by three horizontal batons on the reverse. There is an old, vertical hairline crack in the lower right corner, approx. 5 cm. long, and a handful of pinprick losses. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some careful retouching in the hair, including along an old, vertical hairline crack in His forehead, beard and some of the flesh tones, as well as retouching to some areas of the background. The restoration has been well-carried out and is not obtrusive to the naked eye. Offered in an elaborate carved and gilt wood foliate frame in good condition with some minor chips.
