Condition

Overall the condition of the enamel is very good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. Some of the white enamel in the foliage decoration in the top section has been overpainted. There are a few losses to the enamel, including above the vignette with God the Father, the joint between the main section and the top section, and to the bottom of the main section behind the basin, as well as the bottom of the basin itself. These losses are mirrored on the counter-enamel. There is greening to the copper around the basin, as well as whitish encrustation to the copper inside the basin. The metal curl joining the main section to the bottom of the basin has become detached, but it is stable. There is minor wear and ghosting to some of the gilding, including the rays. There is minor general wear to the leather case, consistent with age.
