Description

  • Six reliefs with saints and the Resurrection
  • oak
  • Swiss, probably Freiburg, circa 1520-1540
the three medallion reliefs inscribed respectively: IOANNES; PHILIPVS; and IACOBVS

Condition

Overall, the condition of the reliefs is good, with some wear and dirt to the surfaces consistent with age. There is evidence of past worming to all the reliefs, and in particular those with St Philip, the Pope, and the Resurrection. The reliefs are carved in sections, and some joints are slightly visible, in particular at the backs. There are several reattachments, in particular to the grotesque tracery, and glue residue is visible around many of these, including at the top of the Resurrection relief and around the relief with St Philip, and on the top of the relief with St Jacob. The tracery at the bottom of the relief with the Pope has been reattached and is very slightly loose. A few sections of the tracery are restored, using resin-like material. These include the scroll at the bottom right of the Pope relief, and a section on the bottom left of the St Philip relief. The nose of St Philip and the top half of his staff are also restored in this material, as is the top of the crosier of the bishop. There are a few minor losses which have not been restored, including to Christ's proper right index and middle finger, and to the head and tip of the wings of the dragon in the St John relief. There are a few minor chips and abrasions at the high points.

Catalogue Note

This rare set of reliefs is distinguished by its elaborate frames, with beautifully carved tracery as well as grotesques, including dolphins and masks. The combination of Gothic and Renaissance motifs points towards an Alpine origin. Compare the oak choir stalls of 1522-1525 in Bern Cathedral (see op. cit.).
