Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The sculpture is made in sections, and stable original joints are visible, including at the wings and at the tops of the legs. There is stable splitting, including to the orb that the eagle perches on. There are also a few minor losses at the splits. There are a number of more prominent joints around the base, some of which are slightly open. There is also stable splitting here. There are a few wood inserts, including in the base. There are various minor nicks and scratches to the surfaces. There is a large square insert in the reed decoration to the side of the base. There are several iron hooks and attachments in the eagle and orb. The eagle rotates. There are a few small holes in the bench for the book.

Catalogue Note

Compare a similar Flemish lectern sold in these rooms as part of the Thomas F. Flannery Jr. Collection on 1-2 December 1983. The more elaborate scrolling bands on the foot of the present lot might indicate it to be slightly later in date.
