Description

  • Head of a Saint
  • limestone, with traces of polychromy, on an alabaster base
  • French, 14th century

Provenance

Sven Oluf Sørensen, acquired at Rue de Seine, Paris, 1950s;
thence by descent to the present owners

Condition

The head was probably once part of a full-length statue. Overall it is in good condition, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is some weathering to the surface, consistent with placement outdoors, having led to some surface losses. Further losses include areas above the proper left eye, to the tip of the nose, to the beard on the proper right side, and to the hair and headdress on the proper left side. There are traces of polychromy, in particular a red to the headdress and the lips. The later alabaster base is in good condition with minor general wear, including a few small chips.
