Description
- Relief roundel with an Emperor
- marble, on a later wood base
- North Italian, 16th century
Condition
Overall, the condition of the marble is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are chips and abrasions throughout, in particular around the edge, the nose, and the drapery around the neck. There are a few naturally occurring inclusions, some of which appear to have crystalised, and there is a reddish residue to some of the inclusions on the left side. The roundel was set in an architectural structure, and there are remnants of filling material at the sides. There is minor staining in areas, including to the background on the right and to the drapery at the shoulder. The back has been left roughly hewn. There is light brownish staining to the surface throughout.
The wood stand is in good condition, with general wear and dirt, including a few chips. The joints at the feet are slightly open but stable. There is very minor evidence of past worming.
