Description

  • Retable
  • gilt and polychromed wood
  • Spanish, probably Valladolid, late 16th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is very good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some evidence of past worming, notably to both far sides and around the top, which has led to a few minor losses. There are a few further very minor losses, including a toe of the child supporting the book, and minor chips along the edges. There is some very minor stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, including to St John's legs. There is wear to the gilding, exposing the red ground in areas. There is also wear to the polychromy, notably to the columns. There are two slightly corroded metal rings at the top to facilitate hanging. The piece is composed of sections and stable joints are slightly visible, notably at the back. The tympanum is held in place with two old metal struts at the back. There is particular evidence of worming to the tympanum at the back. There is a label at the back inscribed: 'Tratado por inyeccion con mata-polillas HYDROPHEN SPEZIAL 55'

Catalogue Note

The figures in this fine retable exhibit the influence of the celebrated sculptor Alonso Berruguette (circa 1489-1561) who brought the innovations of the Italian Renaissance to Spain. Compare with the figures of Apostles from the altar with the Ascension at the church of Santa Maria in Alaejos, near Valladolid, by Esteban Jordán , circa 1590/1600 (Marburg index no: 302.223).
