Description

  • Processional Cross
  • partially gilt copper, on a modern metal stand
  • Italian, probably Tuscany, circa 1500

Condition

Overall the condition of the cross is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The corpus is nailed to the cross and is slightly loose. It is likely that the corpus is associated. The gilding survives in areas, mostly on the reverse and to the centre of the cross and the corpus. There is slight greening to the surface in areas, notably to the chest and the face of Christ, and to the emblem of God the Father at the front. There is a separately-cast section to the reverse at the bottom of the cross. This was probably attached later and might have been for stabilisation. There is some red residue to this separately cast piece in areas. The copper is slightly warped, consistent with the material. The modern metal stand is in good condition, with minor general wear.
