Description

  • Virgin and Child
  • gilt and polychromed walnut
  • Netherlandish, Malines, early 16th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good, with minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. The Virgin probably once wore a headdress or a crown, which has been lost. There is a small loss to the terrasse at the front, and another to the terrasse at the back on the proper left side. There is wear to the gilding throughout, particularly on the Virgin's mantle; there is also some wear to the polychromy, including minor losses in areas. The polychromy and gilding appear to have been refreshed. There is some evidence of past worming, particularly to the reverse. Two metal knops are attached to the underside to stabilise the group when it is standing.
