Description

  • Virgin and Child
  • limewood, on a later wood base
  • German, Swabia, circa 1510

Condition

There is wear to the surface of the wood throughout, and there is stable splitting throughout, consistent with the material. Much of the polychromy has been lost; there are remnants of polychromy, particularly in the faces. The Child's proper right arm is lost. There are further losses, including to the points of the Virgin's crown, to the proper left side of the Child's head, to the Child's proper left hand, and to the bottom of the composition. There is some evidence of past worming, notably at the back and around the bottom at the front. The surface has darkened around the bottom of the sculpture. Otherwise the condition is stable. There are two metal hooks at the back; one of these is corroded. The modern wood base is in good condition with some dirt and wear, including a small loss at the back.
