Overall the condition of the ivory is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. The surface is slightly dry overall. There is a loss to the tracery at the top. There are some remnants of polychromy, notably to the trefoil above the arch, to St John's hair, to some of the tracery at the top, and around the bottom. There are several small filled holes, notably around the arms of the cross and Christ and to the bottom corners of the composition; and a small hole without fill to the base below the cross. There is some stable splitting to the ivory, consistent with the material. There is minor rubbing at the high points, and the surface has darkened in areas, notably to the Virgin's drapery. There is scratching to the reverse. There is also a rectangular carved depression to the reverse. The modern wood stand is in very good condition.
