Description

  • Pair of Doors for a Liturgical Cupboard
  • gilt and polychromed oak, with wrought iron mounts and bolts, on modern metal bases
  • English, probably circa 1500

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are several minor losses around the edges, and to the top left corner of the door with the Agnus Dei. There is a minor loss to the sacramental bread above the chalice. There is a small hole to the left of the Agnus Dei, which probably would have supported a metal insert. There is also an area of loss to the door with the Agnus Dei at the back. The doors are composed in sections and a few stable joints are visible, notably at the back and at the corners. There is minor stable splitting to the wood consistent with the material. There is wear to the gilding and polychromy throughout, including chips, with notable losses to the gilding to the framing. There is corrosion and warping to the iron, consistent with age, and wear to the gilding.
