Description

  • Christ Child Reclining
  • polychromed stucco, on a velvet and embroidered cushion
  • After a model by Desiderio da Settignano (circa 1430-1464) Italian, Florence, third quarter 15th century

Provenance

With Palagonia, Lugano, until May 1994

Condition

Overall the condition of the stucco is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. It is possible that the polychromy conceals some condition points. There is a restoration to the proper left arm, and more minor restorations to the proper right arm. There is wear to the polychromy throughout, including craquelure and flaking. There are several layers of polychromy, and in areas where it has chipped, such as the feet, a canvas lining is slightly visible. There are two small mounts, probably metal, between the shoulders at the back, which have been overpainted. There is some wear and dirt to the velvet cushion, consistent with age, including fraying.
