Condition

The panels are fragments of an original larger relief, and as such there is wear, in particular to the shorter panels where there are losses at the tops. There are further minor losses to the face of the man on the left hand side of the cross and to the beard of the man on the far right side of the composition. There is minor veining to the bone, consistent with the material. There is a stable split to the central relief at the centre. There are some chips and scratches in areas, including to the edges. There is some yellowing to the bone, consistent with the material, in particular to the top of the panel with the cross and to the backs. There is some rubbing to the high points, in particular to the faces. There is glue or varnish to the reverse of two panels, which may have been applied to stabilise the surface of the ossified bone. Otherwise, the condition is good, with some dirt and wear. There is wear to the surface of the leather case, and there are some minor losses to the leather in areas, which may be burn marks. The leather has significantly darkened. There is wear to the velvet lining, consistent with age.
