Description
- Hilt with the head of a 'Green Man' and a Moor
- stag horn, with wrought iron mounts, on an ebonised wood base
- Possibly French, 18th century
Condition
There is stable splitting to the ivory, consistent with the material, in particular a few slightly open splits to either side of the hilt. There is an area of wear and a hole to the neck of the Moor. There are four small holes around the hilt which might have been used for mounting. There is a further slightly open split to the face of the Moor, where a metal pin is placed to join the parts together. There is also veining to the ivory here, consistent with the material. The hilt is hollow, and there is an opening at the top. The hilt is mounted in a wrought metal ring, and there is staining to the bottom ring of the ivory. There is dirt and yellowing to the hilt throughout. There are minor scratches to the surface. Otherwise, the condition is stable. The modern wood base can be detached.
