The present work is a preparatory study for the figure playing a triangle, on the far right of Natoire's 1741 painting depicting The Entry of Marc Antony into Ephesus (Fig. 1), now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nîmes. Five closely comparable studies for the same project are known to exist, similarly executed in a combination of red chalk heightened with white chalk, three of which are in the collection of the Musée du Louvre, Paris, and one in a Parisian private collection.1
