Condition

Laid down on paper. The sheet has discolored somewhat and there are signs of old water staining to the right edge and to the building on the right. There are a number of small nicks and losses to the extremities and a band of discoloration down the left edge. There is an old horizontal crease across the centre of the sheet and some minor abrasions and an old pinprick hole to the upper right corner. The pen and brown ink medium remains very strong throughout this large and highly impressive sheet. Sold in a modern giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

Though better known as one of the leading engravers active in Bologna in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the present work is a fine, signed example of Mattioli's work as a draughtsman.  A comparable landscape drawing, also executed in pen and brown ink, though on a considerably less ambitious scale, was on the French art market in 2007.1
