Catalogue Note
As Dr. Bernhard Schnackenburg kindly confirmed at the time of the 2001 sale, this is an early work by Isack, probably executed before 1640. Stylistically comparable drawings are in Berlin, Leiden and various private collections.1 Unlike his elder brother Adriaen, Isack van Ostade died very young, at the age of only twenty eight, and as a result his drawings are far rarer. Indeed, substantial compositions like this hardly ever come on the market.
