Catalogue Note

The rare figure drawings of David Teniers the Younger stand out among other Flemish drawings of the period, both technically and in their great verve and accomplishment.  Teniers was one of very few artists of his time to favor the use of black lead, rather than black chalk or pen and ink, and this distinctive medium results in a flickering, animated play of light and a great sense of movement, qualities that are particularly evident in this substantial sheet of studies.  The study of the seated man was used as the basis for a figure in a painting of the early 1660s, Archers in a Landscape (fig. 1), in which he appears in exactly the same pose, though wearing a hat.1
