Catalogue Note

In the summers of 1835, 1836 and 1837 Palmer visited Wales in order to explore the mountains, castles and wildness.  The present sheet is one of only two surviving watercolors from the 1837 tour, the other having been sold at Sotheby's, London in 1996.1

When discussing the present work in his catalogue raisonné, Raymond Lister commented that Palmer's precise inscription and dating suggests that it was executed on the spot.

1. In Cusop Dingle, near Hay-on-Wye, dated the 24 June 1837 (sale, London, Sotheby's, 24 November 1996, lot 110)
