Catalogue Note

In his catalogue of the artist's drawings, Marco Riccomini dates this sheet to Creti's early career.  He compares it closely to the Head of a young man, which was twice in the art market in 1988 and in 1990,1 and to a drawing of the same subject in the Uffizi.2

These handsome sheets must have been intended as works of art in their own right to be sold to collectors.
