Description

  • Antonio Tempesta
  • Scipio Africanus and his army attacking Carthage
  • Pen and brown ink and wash over traces of black chalk

Literature

We are very grateful to Marjolein Leesberg for identifying the subject of this drawing, and for kindly pointing out that it is the study, in reverse, for one of a set of eight prints illustrating episodes from the life of Scipio Africanus, engraved after Tempesta's designs by the unknown monogrammist I.C.G. (who worked in Italy c. 1620), and published by Pieter de Jode the Elder.  An impression of the print is in the Rijksmuseum (inv. RP-P-H-H-383).

Condition

Laid down. Overall in fairly good condition. Some minor losses and areas of abrasions along the edges or the right and left margins. Losses at the lower right corner of the sheet and the tip of lower left corner is missing. There is a hole in the mount at the left margin. Slight vertical crease running down the centre of the sheet. Pen and ink and wash remain strong and vibrant throughout the sheet - image retains its power.
