Catalogue Note

Roberts arrived in Petra on the 6th March 1839 and the following day he recorded in his journal ‘I am more and more astonished and bewildered with this extraordinary city… the valley has been filled with temples, public buildings, triumphal arches… and the air is perfumed with the most delicious fragrance.’1 We are grateful to Briony Llewellyn for her help when cataloguing this work.
