  • Herders and their animals in a landscape beside a castle
  • Point of the brush and grey wash over black chalk, within black chalk framing lines, on vellum;
    signed with monogram and dated in black chalk, lower right:  CSL 1661.

Condition

Hinged to the mount at the upper margin. The vellum has buckled, buckling more prominent in the upper right section of the sheet. The vellum has also yellowed and thinned and this is more noticeable in the upper right section of the sheet. Chalk and wash remain strong and vibrant.

Catalogue Note

Drawings on vellum are rare in Saftleven's work, but he was a highly original artist, and it is not surprising to find him experimenting with an unusual technique.  Quite a number of 17th-century Dutch artists occasionally made rather finished landscapes on vellum, presumably to be sold; a work of this type by Adriaen van de Velde was recently sold in New York.1
