  • Pietro Buonaccorsi, called Perino del Vaga
  • Recto and verso: designs for a ceiling decoration with winged figures, a soldier on horseback and grotesque designs
  • Pen and brown ink and wash over black chalk (recto and verso);
    bears lettering on the verso, probably indications of colouring and in black chalk: indoratura 

Provenance

Probably from an album of drawings offered for sale in 1678 by Jean Dughet;
possibly George Ramsay, 8th Earl of Dalhousie (died 1787);
possibly his son, George Ramsay, 9th Earl of Dalhousie (1770-1838), who married Christian, only child of Charles Broun of Colstoun;
their son, James Ramsay, 10th Earl and 1st Marquess of Dalhousie (1812-1860);
his eldest daughter, Lady Susan Broun-Ramsay (died 1898);
by whom bequeathed to her great-niece, Edith Christian Baird, later Lady Broun-Lindsay;
thence by descent

Condition

Folded in the middle. Three of the margins with small fold. The sheet is uncut at all the edges. Around the margins there are litle tears and a bigger one of about three centimeters is at the center of the left margin. The bottom left corner slightly torn. Two brown oil staines in the central part of the sheet towards the left side. Little foxing scattered around.

Catalogue Note

The type of ornamentation suggested on both the recto and verso is very close to the decorative scheme devised by Perino and his followers, such as Luzio Romano (active in Rome 1528-1575), for the Castel Sant' Angelo (1543-1548).
