Description

  • mother of pearl, ebony, rosewood
  • the ebony box 12cm. high, 30.5cm. wide, 22cm. deep; 4¾in., 1ft., 8in. ¾in.
inlaid in brass and mother-of-pearl, the hinged top with a plate engraved Lady E. C. Ramsay opening to reveal a fitted interior; and a Victorian brass bound rosewood box, circa 1840, with a plate engraved SGD and a red velvet lined interior (2)

Provenance

The first box; Lady Edith Christian Ramsay (1839-1871), later the wife of Sir James Fergusson, 6th Bt. and daughter of James Andrew Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie (1812-1860).
The second box; Susan (Georgiana), Marchioness of Dalhousie (1817-1853)

Condition

Two decorative boxes in Country House condition which show signs of age and use. The first with some typical movement to veneers and losses to rosewood. There are also some losses to inlay. There is a veneer loss to corner of lid. The escutcheon is lacking as is the lock. The interior appears complete although it is tired. The second is good quality. The silvered metal mounts are probably brass but this silvered surface exhibits tarnishing, old marks scratches and wear throughout. There are some age cracks to the top. It is an attractive box which like the other shows signs of wear and old marks and scratches.
