Provenance

Probably Jonathan Richardson the Younger (1694-1771);
Probably his posthumous sale, London, Langford and Son, 18 February 1772, lot 45 ('Richardson Senior, His own portrait');
James Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie (1812-60), before 1861;
Lady Susan Georgiana Broun Bourke (1837-98), by whom brought to Colstoun House, Haddington (according to an old handwritten label on the reverse)

Literature

J. Kerslake, Early Georgian Portraits. National Portrait Gallery, London 1977, vol. 1, pp. 228 and 231, under cat. no. 706, reproduced vol. 2, plate 674.

Condition

The canvas has a firm lining, the paint surface is secure and stable and in seemingly nice condition. The varnish appears even and clear. The blues of the sitters jacket and cap have been painted in thin washes and a slight degree of wear is visible in parts. The white of his cravat and the flesh tones are all very well preserved. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals next to no visible restoration - the varnish does fluoresce slightly opaque - there may be some wash strengthening to parts of the dark tones of the background. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in fair condition.

Catalogue Note

Formerly identified as a portrait of Matthew Prior, this small-scale work is in fact an autograph version of Richardson's Self Portrait, dated 1729, today in the National Portrait Gallery, London (inv. no. NPG 706).
