the circular tilt-top with a broad cut-brass border, on a concave triangular stem and triangular base with winged gilt-brass paw feet
Condition
A very fine table in country house condition. The brass inlay to the top has some minor areas of lifting which would benefit from professional attention to secure. There are some areas of rubbing to the polished surface which shows exceptional figuring throughout. The tilt-top is in good working order. There are some signs of tarnishing to the brass feet but this is circumstantial as the chasing is of a very high quality. With some old marks and scratches commensurate with age and use.

Catalogue Note
With its distinctive inlaid brass with line engraved scrolled foliage, men and beasts, this superb table relates to the output of a number of highly regarded London cabinet-makers of the 1820s, but perhaps most closely to the work of John Wellsman at Creedy Park, Devon. Wellsman supplied Sir John Davie, 9th Bt. (1798-1824) with an extensive suite of furniture for the Drawing Room in 1820 and the treatment of the brass inlay of the present table relates closely to this commission, sold Sotheby's, Important English Furniture, 7 November 1997, lots 87-91. For a cabinet with similar inlay, from another Scottish Collection, see that offered, Sotheby's Olympia, Braemar Castle, 26 April 2006, lot 265.
