Catalogue Note

The present commode à ressaut trapézoïdal is after the celebrated model by Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806, maître 1768) delivered around 1776 for Louis XVI’s Cabinet de Retraite at Fontainebleau. Riesener made a number of similar pieces for other members of the French Royal Family, including one for the Comtesse de Provence (1753-1810) formerly at Versailles and now at Waddesdon Manor (inv. no. W2/37/5).

The canted forecorners, the fret marquetry enclosing water-lilies and the trapeze-shaped central panel are all characteristic of Riesener’s production of the late 1770s, and are almost exclusively found on pieces delivered to the Crown.

As with models by the likes of Benneman and Weisweiler that were or had been part of the French Royal collections, this model was a source of inspiration for the best cabinet-makers of the second half of the 19th century, such as Linke, Dasson, or Sormani, who would sometimes produce exact replicas of these pieces.
