Description

  • 72.5cm. high, 49cm. wide, 41cm. deep; 2ft. 4½in., 1ft. 7½in., 1ft. 4¼in.
the hinged top enclosing a well above a frieze with a side drawer, remounted, with a label to the underside Inventory 1838

Provenance

Most probably purchased by Arthur Hill-Trevor, 3rd Viscount Dungannon (1798 – 1862) for 3, Grafton Street, London;
According to a label to the underside moved to Brynkinalt Hall, Denbighshire before 1838 and thence by descent.

Condition

Overall in very good conserved condition. The drawer has one repair to the lining and there are some minor repairs to the veneer to the front notably at the key hole. The swag mounts have possibly been re-gilt. With some minor old marks and scratches commensurate with age and use.

Catalogue Note

This table a ouvrage relates to a group of small tables attributed to Montingy. An almost identical table stamped Montigny, with a hinged top and side drawer, formerly in a grand Belgian collection was sold Sotheby’s, Monaco, 18 June 1989, lot 862. A further table with identical grotesque mounts to the front and sides was sold Christie’s, Monaco 17 June 2000, lot 257. Although not stamped it is attributed to Montigny and sold for nearly $130,000. For further information on Montigny please see next lot.
