Description

  • 49.5cm. high, 42.5cm. wide; 1ft. 7½in., 1ft. 4¾in.
the gesso laid down on copper, with paper labels to the reverse inscribed Brynkinalt RM one inscribed in pencil No. 23 twice, No. 14 and Bottom Right of Cupboard Door, the other inscribed in pencil No. 12 twice, No. 27 once and Bottom left of Passage door, regilt

Provenance

Most probably purchased by Sir John Trevor, M.P. (circa 1637 – 1717) for Brynkinalt Hall, Denbighshire;
Thence by descent.

Condition

Overall in good condition. There has been some minor retouching to the gilding which is visible as there is some variation to the craquleur and colour of the gilt gesso. There are small cracks along the lines of construction to the corners of the front and to the cresting at the top of the mirror. With some minor old marks and scratches commensurate with age and use.

Catalogue Note

A mirror with a very similar border and cresting attributed to Gerrit Jensen (fl. 1680 - 1715) with brass mounts and on an ebony ground is in the collection of the Dukes of Buccleuch at Boughton House. The mirror is illustrated in T Murdoch Ed., Boughton House, The English Versailles, London, 1992, p. 132, fig. 129.
