Condition
An unusual piece in "country house condition" with the usual marks and scratches consistent with age, and traces of old woodworm which appears to be no longer active. There are some superficial accretions as well as some water staining and minor losses to the veneer. The mounts are tarnished; the later fitted interior with drawers that have slightly expanded. The first drawer is missing part of its ivory knob. Not very stable, this fascinating piece is in need of some attention and cleaning according to taste.

Catalogue Note
The inscription on the present corner cupboard relates to the Peninsular War (1807-1814) - an episode of the Napoleonic wars - and in particular to the battle of El Bodón, Salamanca, fought on 25 September 1811 between the French and Anglo-Portuguese armies under Thomas Picton, as well as to the Battle of Waterloo.
This might relate to the famous King's German Legion, a British Army unit composed mostly of expatriate German soldiers between 1803-1816. The Legion was formed in 1803 after the forced dissolution of the Electorate of Hanover, and played a vital role in several campaigns during the Napoleonic Wars, most notably the Peninsular War and the Hundred Days.
Disbanded in 1816, several of its units were incorporated into the army of the Kingdom of Hanover.
