Description

  • wool, flatweave tapestry technique
  • approximately 385cm. high, 414cm. wide; 12ft. 7in., 13ft. 7in.
woven with a landscape setting incorporating an inn and further buildings on the distant horizon, with seated resting figures and further figures in a horse led carriage in the foreground, the centre of top of composition with partial armorial (the left side of the coat-of-arms visible are those of the Counts Lippe-Detmold), within a three sided floral main border within narrow beaded frame pattern borders; tapestry now lacking upper horizontal border and top section of armorial panel

Condition

Overall measurements: 414cm across the top, 410cm across the bottom, 385cm along the left side, 385cm along the right side There are old dark marks and small holes along the lower edge, especially the lower corner.There are speckles of white surface marks visible in the foliage (which are removable with soft brush). Some small holes with dark edges, central foreground above the horizon, and between the two cypress trees, and a water mark top right corner of main field, in the light area of sky above the foliage which meets the border. Now lacking upper border and top section of armorial panel (not turned under). The blue selvedge is in distressed condition with warp threads showing in areas an sections lacking in areas, and would therefore benefit from being turned under. Presently with an old partial linen lining, and sleeve across the top for a pole. Recommend re-lining, and Velcro to be attached across the top edge for hanging purposes in the future. Selvedge in need of some attention.
