Description
- Neapolitan School, Circa 1700
- Architectural capriccio with the martyrdom of Saint Stephen
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has a firm relining. The varnish is discoloured with a degree of wear to the paint surface along the bottom edge. There is some abrasion from the frame at the edges and an old restored damage in the sky beside the architectural feature at the right. Tiny chips and losses are scattered throughout but there is no further major damage. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals very little else: the varnish fluoresces opaque and as such any earlier restoration is not visible. Offered in a plain gilt wood frame in fair condition.
