Literature

B. Meijer, Parma e Bruxelles. Committenza e collezionismo farnesiani alle due corti, Parma 1988, p. 209, cat. no. 9, reproduced.

Condition

The canvas is unlined. The painting is in overall good condition. The paint surface is stable with a discoloured varnish and some small, now discoloured, retouchings scattered throughout. These are principally in the sky at the upper left hand margin, in the calves of Actaeon and in the hunting dogs in the lower left hand corner, in the sky to the right hand side of the central tree and in the water in the lower right hand corner. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a streaky and uneven varnish. There is a small repaired damage measuring approximately 1 in. in diameter in the upper leaves of the central tree and a larger area of strengthening in the sky to the upper right of the tree measuring approximately 6 ½ by 4 in. Offered in a carved and gesso gilt wood frame in good condition.
