Catalogue Note
Ferdinand II, born 12th January 1810 to King Francis I and Maria Isabella of Spain became King of the Two Sicilies in 1830 until his death in 1859.
This plate was painted at a turbulent point in his reign. The previous year had seen the Sicilian revolution of independence which began with a rising in Palermo in the January, and sparked similar revolutions throughout Italy and eventually Europe. Sicily proclaimed its independence and in response the King assembled an army of 20,000 under the command of General Carlo Filangieri and dispatched it to Sicily to subdue the Liberals and restore his authority. In one particularly violent episode the King ordered a Naval flotilla to shell the city of Messina, killing many civilians which earned him the nickname "Rè Bomba", [King Bomb]. After a campaign lasting close to nine months Sicily's Liberal regime was completely subdued on 15th May 1849.
