Catalogue Note

Nagasaki aogai (mother-of-pearl) lacquer work rose to prominence during the Koka era (1844-1847) and peaked in the Kaei era (1844-1847). This distinctive type of lacquerware is known for its colourful inlay on a black lacquer ground, and was applied to numerous household artefacts such as the present work table.
