Catalogue Note

Rare. Music by Marin Marais (1656-1728) rarely appears at auction and we can trace no record for this first edition.  Marais was the leading French Baroque viol player and composer: a great figure in French instrumental music.  This volume was published three years after Marais's first book of Pièces, for which it provides accompaniments.  The new music for two viols at the end of the volume includes a suite in F-sharp minor, an imitative "Suitte" in B minor and a rondeau in G minor.  The music for single viol contains preludes, fantaisies, chaconnes, tombeau de Mr Meliton, dance pieces and finally an extended theme and variations in G major.
