Catalogue Note

This Ballade is Grieg's most important work for solo piano, a set of fourteen variations on the Norwegian folk melody 'Morning Song', quoted here.  "It is darkly coloured music, but glows with intensity and seems to bear witness to profoundly tragic events in the artist's life" (John Horton in TNG). One note at the end is altered from that found in the first edition (1876).
