Catalogue Note

Working manuscript sketches, written on slips of paper like this, are typical of Delius.  He habitually cut up manuscript paper for use on his frequent walking trips, jotting down ideas for projected compositions, many, as here, apparently never completed.  The style and handwriting indicate that it dates from the composer's maturity; for a similar example, see Sotheby's sale on 21 May 1998, lot 194.
