Catalogue Note
Rare. Only one copy in UK libraries: the British Library, but not inscribed. The Morgan Library and Museum has a deluxe copy inscribed to Dukas with the same date. The dedicatee, Catherine Stevens (1865-1942), was effectively Debussy's "damoiselle élue" or "chosen one", in that he proposed marriage to her at around this time. Debussy also dedicated his autograph manuscript of "En sourdine" (from the first set of Fêtes galantes) to her in 1892. She was the daughter of the Belgian painter Alfred Stevens and well-known in artistic circles.
