Condition

Original canvas. The canvas appears sound. There are some fine lines of paint cracking in scattered areas across the work, predominantly towards the edges: this appears stable. There is some minor frame abrasion along the edges of the work, most visible in the upper left, upper right and lower right corners. There is some surface dirt and studio matter but, subject to the above, the work appears to be in very good overall condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some fine lines of retouching around the edges of the work in places, and some further spots of retouching to the black pigment at the lower centre of the work. There is also a diagonal line of fluorescence to the grey pigment in the upper half of the work, with some possible old retouching. This has all been sensitively executed. The work is presented in a canvas slip and held within a painted wooden frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
