Condition

The canvas is original and appears sound. There is a slight wrinkle to the canvas towards the left side of the upper horizontal edge, and the canvas undulates very slightly in places. There is an area where the canvas has been folded over as a result of being framed and is adhered to the front of the edge of the canvas towards the lower half of the right vertical edge. There are some very fine lines of reticulation apparent upon very close inspection in isolated instances to the work. There are some fine lines of craquelure visible to the dark blue pigment of the figure's coat and trousers, with some associated lifting, with one or two further lines of craquelure elsewhere. There are some lines of craquelure and a small associated spot of loss and lifting to the green pigment in the lower left corner just to the left of the figure's sword, and there are a few further very small flecks of loss to the dark red pigment at the lower part of the left vertical edge. There are two small spots of loss at the lower half of the right vertical edge, and a small fleck of loss to an area of yellow pigment on the figure's left arm. There may be one or two very small flecks of possible old loss elsewhere. There is some light surface dirt in places but, subject to the above, the work appears to be in good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals a layer of discoloured varnish. There are some spots of retouching to the dark blue coat and trousers of the figure. There is also a spot of retouching to the yellow pigment towards the top of the left vertical edge, and a possible spot of retouching to the figure's face. The work is presented in a moulded gilt frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
