Condition

Original canvas. The canvas appears sound. There are very slight undulations to the canvas in all four corners. There are two or three very small pushes along the lower edge, possibly from objects between the stretcher and the canvas, one of which with associated cracking and a small point of loss. There is a light push with associated fine lines of cracquelure in the lower right quadrant, only visible upon close inspection. There are a few small areas of reticulation to the umber pigment towards the left edge and the dark green pigment towards the centre of the work. There is a very small area of the loss in the upper left corner, possibly from where an impasto element has come away from the canvas. There are two further small points of loss in the lower right quadrant, towards the centre. There a few additional tiny specks of loss in the upper right corner and just beneath the right hand arm of the red windmill. There are some elements of studio detritus in places. There is a light layer of surface dirt to the work, and potentially a light bloom in places. Subject to the above the work is in very good overall condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an uneven layer of varnish which makes the surface difficult to read, but there do not appear to be any obvious signs of restoration or retouching. The work is held within a simple gilt painted wood frame. Please telephone the department on +44 207 293 6424 if you have any questions.
