Exhibited

London, Alex. Reid & Lefevre Ltd, Recent Paintings by Vanessa Bell, March 1934, cat. no.14.

Condition

Original canvas. The canvas undulates in both the upper quadrants, but otherwise appears sound. There is scattered craquleure to the work. There are a few very tiny lines of reticulation apparent to an area of the brown pigment at the left side of the table cloth. There are two small spots of loss and slight lifting apparent towards the centre of the lower edge, with a further very tiny possible speck of loss beneath the signature in the lower left corner. There is a light horizontal impression near the centre of the upper horizontal edge, thought to have occurred whilst the paint was still wet. There is some studio detritus, surface dirt and staining apparent to the work, most apparent at the centre of the left edge, and in the lower right quadrant. Ultraviolet light reveals some minor areas of fluorescence, which are thought to be in keeping with the Artist's materials, and are not thought to be indicative of retouching. The work is presented in an ornate moulded frame, with a linen slip. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
